SHIRLEY, NY — Hateful anti-Islam graffiti was discovered Sunday afternoon on a fence surrounding the future home of the Islamic Center of Mastic-Shirley.
The disturbing message was spray-painted across a banner announcing the construction of the new mosque. Police responded to the scene and are investigating the incident as a “hate matter,” according to Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine.
“Hate has no home in Suffolk County,” Romaine said, adding that police are pursuing all leads.
The Islamic Center of Mastic-Shirley has served the local Muslim community since 2002 and is currently building a larger mosque to accommodate its growing congregation.
The incident comes amid continued concerns over Islamophobia and anti-Muslim vandalism across Long Island. Community members are calling for a full investigation and accountability for those responsible.
