The strike involving the Long Island Rail Road has officially come to an end after the MTA and union leaders reached an agreement Monday night, ending days of disruption for commuters across Long Island and New York City.
According to Governor Kathy Hochul, phased train service is expected to begin resuming Tuesday at noon as crews work to restore full operations throughout the rail system.
The strike, which began Saturday morning, marked the first major LIRR work stoppage in decades and affected nearly 300,000 daily riders. During the shutdown, commuters faced heavy traffic congestion, packed buses, delayed travel times, and limited transportation alternatives across the region.
The labor dispute centered around wages, inflation, and contract negotiations involving multiple unions representing approximately 3,500 railroad workers.
Officials are advising riders to check updated train schedules before traveling Tuesday afternoon, as service restoration is expected to happen gradually.
The resolution of the strike comes as a major relief for workers, students, businesses, and residents who rely on the LIRR daily throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
