New York officials and law enforcement agencies are speaking out following the deadly shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego, which authorities are investigating as a possible anti-Muslim hate crime.

Governor Kathy Hochul condemned the attack as a “violent, Islamophobic attack,” while confirming that New York State Police are in communication with mosques and Islamic centers across the state regarding security measures.

NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani described the shooting as “an apparent act of anti-Muslim violence” and announced increased NYPD presence around mosques throughout New York City out of an abundance of caution.

On Long Island, Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine also condemned the violence, stating:

“Today’s murders in a mosque cannot be overlooked or forgotten. We stand with the Muslim community.”

The Suffolk County Police Department confirmed it is actively monitoring intelligence and maintaining heightened vigilance around houses of worship across the county.

Tensions remain high within the Muslim community across New York as families prepare for upcoming Eid gatherings while also processing the shock and grief surrounding the attack. Many mosques and Islamic centers are reviewing security protocols and increasing awareness measures ahead of large community prayers and events.
