Federal Judge Blocks National Guard Deployment to Portland
In a major legal setback for the Trump administration, U.S. District Judge Karin J. Immergut has issued a temporary restraining order blocking any deployment of the National Guard to Portland, Oregon.
The ruling halts both state and federally activated Guard units from being sent to the city, citing constitutional concerns over federal overreach and the use of military forces in civilian matters. Judge Immergut stated that the unrest in Portland does not meet the legal definition of “rebellion” that would justify federal intervention.
The Pentagon had recently announced plans to deploy members of the California National Guard to Portland after Oregon officials objected to using their own troops. The move prompted immediate lawsuits from both Oregon and California, arguing it violated state sovereignty.
The temporary order remains in effect until October 18, as the case is expected to advance to higher courts. The ruling underscores an intensifying battle over states’ rights versus federal authority amid growing political tension across the country.
