New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has released a statement recognizing Ashura, calling it “a time of remembrance, sacrifice and reflection.”

In his message, the mayor reflected on the legacy of Imam Hussain (AS), stating that his unwavering commitment to truth, dignity, and justice continues to inspire people today. He also highlighted New York City’s diverse faith communities and the shared pursuit of justice and service to others.

Ashura, observed on the 10th of Muharram, commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions at the Battle of Karbala, a defining moment in Islamic history remembered by millions of Muslims around the world.

Mayor Mamdani concluded his message by expressing hope that New Yorkers will continue carrying forward these values in building a more just city.
