VALLEY STREAM, NY: Parents, students and community leaders are calling for greater transparency and accountability from the Valley Stream Central High School District following concerns involving alleged discrimination, unequal treatment, curriculum decisions, Regents examination exemptions and possible retaliation against educators who advocated for students.

Community members say one area of concern is the amount of classroom time reportedly devoted to 9/11. Students and families have questioned whether the instruction offered enough balance and historical context and why other significant perspectives and experiences were not given similar attention.

Questions have also been raised about Regents examination exemptions reportedly given to certain students without parents fully understanding or consenting to the decision.

According to community members, some families may have agreed to the exemptions because of fears involving deportation or other immigration-related consequences. They are now seeking answers about how students were selected, what information parents received and whether families were clearly informed about how an exemption could affect a student’s academic record or future educational opportunities.

Families have also reported concerns involving the treatment of Haitian, Latino, South Asian, Sikh, Muslim and other immigrant students. Allegations include discriminatory comments and unequal treatment based on race, ethnicity, religion or immigration background.

Community leaders emphasized that these concerns remain allegations requiring a fair and thorough investigation.

Another major concern involves a guidance counselor who reportedly advocated for affected students and was later removed from her position. Her removal has led community members to question whether she faced retaliation for raising concerns and speaking on behalf of students.

“No student, teacher, counselor or staff member should face retaliation for reporting concerns or advocating for students,” community members said.

The concerns were publicly presented during a Board of Education meeting, where community leaders called for answers and accountability. Videos containing the public comments and meeting were reportedly later removed from online public viewing.

The community leaders involved were subsequently invited to one private meeting with members of the school board. However, they say the underlying issues remain unresolved and that no clear plan of action or meaningful public follow-up has been communicated.

The community is calling for:

  • A thorough and independent investigation into allegations of discrimination, unequal treatment and retaliation.
  • A review of the circumstances surrounding the removal of the guidance counselor who advocated for students.
  • Transparency regarding the 9/11 curriculum and how curriculum decisions are made.
  • A review of Regents exemptions reportedly issued without adequate parental understanding or consent.
  • Clear communication with parents before decisions are made that could affect a student’s academic record or future opportunities.
  • Protection for students, teachers, counselors and staff members who report concerns or advocate for students.
  • Transparency regarding complaints raised by families and the steps being taken to address them.
  • Meaningful public follow-through after concerns are brought before the Board of Education.
  • Equal and respectful treatment for every student, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion or immigration background.
  • A safe environment in which students, parents and educators can speak without fear of retaliation.

Community members say their effort is not intended to create division. They want accountability, transparency and protection for students and educators.

“Our children deserve to be heard, protected and treated equally,” community advocates said. “When educators and community leaders speak up for them, their concerns deserve to be taken seriously and addressed with meaningful action.”
