NEW YORK — More than 1,000 worshippers gathered tonight in Times Square for the fifth annual Taraweeh prayer, marking another milestone for one of the most visible Ramadan observances in the heart of Manhattan.
The evening began with Maghrib and Isha prayers led by @dr.farajhasan , followed by Taraweeh recitation by @justfaisallatif Faisal Latif of Florida. Community members from across New York and neighboring states filled the iconic plaza, forming neat prayer rows amid the bright lights and steady flow of onlookers.
This year’s gathering marked a notable shift from previous events: while earlier editions drew criticism, tonight’s program was met with protest for the first time. Despite that, the atmosphere remained calm and respectful, with organizers emphasizing peace, unity, and spiritual reflection throughout the evening.
The event was hosted by @wayoflifesq SQ and sponsored by @dropletsofmercy and @darbarshalal .Darbars Chicken and Grill distributed approximately 1,500 hot meals to attendees and passersby, reinforcing Ramadan’s message of generosity and service.
Organizers said the annual Times Square Taraweeh continues to grow each year, serving not only as a place of worship but also as a powerful symbol of Muslim visibility in America’s most famous public square.
Community leaders thanked volunteers, sponsors, and participants for helping make the night successful and peaceful, adding that the goal remains simple: to share faith, compassion, and connection—openly and proudly—during the holy month of Ramadan.
